It is a Private Christian Religious Minority (Roman Catholic) Medical College which is run by Catholic Bishops' Conference of India since 1963. The St.John's Medical College is a part of St.John's National Academy of Health Sciences which is affiliated under Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences - RGUHS, Karnataka and recognized by National Medical Commission (NMC) which was previously known as MCI. It is a Medical college of great repute and ranked 14th among medical colleges in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2020. It grabbed 17th position among the Medical colleges of India as listed by India Today, 13th by The Week in 2019, and 4th in India by Outlook India in the year 2017. It has consistently been listed among the top 10 medical colleges of India for the past 10 years and 25th for the past 4 years in line. The St. John's Medical College and Hospital have received a Five Star grading by The National Assessment and Accreditation Council, a Review Committee of the University Grants Commission.

The St.John's NAHS is spread over 148 acres of lush green campus with easy accessibility from any part of the city and is well connected with Aerial, Rail, and Road routes. The college has 150 seats in MBBS, 131 seats in 25 departments of Post-Graduate studies, and 29 seats in the 15 categories of Super-Specialization studies.
