The Institute of Medical Sciences, BHU, Varanasi, is a Government College established in the Year 1960. The Institute Of Medical Sciences (IMS-BHU) is one of the Six institutes of Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi, India and comprises three faculties, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dental Sciences and Faculty of Ayurveda which are residential and co-educational. The College is affiliated to Banaras Hindu University, located in Uttar Pradesh which is an autonomous central university under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, government of India and recognized by National Medical Commission (NMC). It has an annual intake of 100 seats in MBBS, 172 seats in 28 disciplines of Post-Graduate studies and 42 seats in 11 disciplines of Super- Specialization studies. 

It's a great pride to our Country as The IMS-BHU has been listed in the top 100 World's Best Medical colleges for 2021. IMS-BHU was ranked seventh among medical colleges in India in 2020 by India Today, sixth in 2019 by The Week and eight in 2019 by Outlook India. The college was ranked 6th in 2020 and 7th in 2021 by NIRF.

Medical education in Varanasi, the oldest living city of the world, dates from the days of Sushruta 500 BC. Infact, this is also the history of Medical education in India. Perhaps it is a continuation of this historical perspective that Medical education in Banaras Hindu University took roots in 1920 with the establishment of Department of Ayurveda under Faculty of Oriental Learning and Theology. In the year 1924-25, Ayurvedic Aushadhalaya was established  and Years later, in 1960 the Ayurvedic College was converted to the College of Medical Sciences and the The postgraduate medical education, started as in-service program in 1963.

The campus of IMS lies at the front part of university. The gigantic campus contains the medical college, the hospital, the student and resident hostels, the staff quarters, a post office, a temple (BHU Vishwanathji), playgrounds and sporting fields. While the hospital section of the campus is typically crowded and busy, the residential part of the campus is quiet and idyllic punctuated with small parks. It has the state of the art infrastructure with spacious classrooms, Lecture halls to accommodate around 250, Examination rooms, Demonstration rooms, Seminar halls. There are Departmental museums and well-equipped Laboratories. The campus has three hostels for undergraduate men named Punarvasu Atrey Hostel, Ruiya Medical Hostel and Dhanwntri Hostel, and four hostels for postgraduate men named Old P. G. Hostel, New P.G. Hostel, Sushruta hostel Ruiya Annexe. and Married Doctors Hostel. Undergraduate and postgraduate women live in Kasturba Girls Hostel. All hostels run their own messes. There is a huge Auditorium located deep inside the campus. There are good Canteens and Recreation halls are amongst the best. There are exclusive facilities for Indoor and Outdoor Games and Sports facilities. The college has a spacious library area with an excellent collection of Medical books of over 60000 and International and National Journals, back volumes, Atlases, Dictionaries, Directories, Encyclopaedias, Technical Reports. There are separate Reading rooms and the E- library has good Internet facility. The college has pre-clinical, para-clinical and clinical disciplines.

Sir Sunderlal Hospital, IMS - BHU is primarily a teaching and training hospital for the undergraduates, post graduates, super specialties and research courses run by the Institute of Medical Sciences in the various disciplines of medicine, nursing and paramedics. It is the only Tertiary care Hospital providing specialty and Super Specialty services to the health care needs of about 20 Crore population of Eastern UP, Western Bihar, adjoining MP, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand as well as neighboring country of Nepal. It is a unique hospital to provide both Ayurveda and Modern Medicine services under one roof. It also cares for the health of approximately 60,000 people of the University community including students, teachers and employees and their dependents. Besides this, Sir Sunderlal Hospital acts as the main referral hospital for Diesel Locomotive Works, Varanasi, Military Hospital, NTPC, Coal India, BHEL, and other neighboring Hospitals of the catchment area. The medical aspirants seeking MBBS/BDS admission at Uttar Pradesh will have to register themselves for the Directorate General of Medical Education and Training, UP is functioning directly under the State Government admission process by filling out their application form. Telangana MBBS/BDS admission 2020 is done on the basis of marks secured in NEET. Candidates who will qualify NEET Exam and meet the eligibility requirements can only register and fill the application form for Uttar Pradesh MBBS / BDS admission. Directorate General of Medical Education and Training (DMET)counseling is conducted in Three Rounds (Round 1, Round 2, and Mop-up Round). The fourth round being the College Round, if the number of vacant seats is x, then a 10x the list of registered candidates will be sent to the college and is to be exhausted strictly in order of merit. Directorate General of Medical Education and Training UP conducts the combined (Government and Private) admissions for UP NEET-UG medical

Eligibility For Admission
1. Qualification:

• 12th or (10+2 Equivalent) with Minimum 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry, Biology & English for UR &  40% for SC/ST/OBC.
• Those who have qualified NEET-UG by scoring the minimum qualifying percentage will be eligible for the Admission and Counseling. Candidates should have earned a minimum of 50 percentile (40th  percentile for SC/ST/OBC and 45th percentile for General-PH) in order to become eligible for NEET 2020 counseling rounds
• AGE: A student must have completed an age of 17 years at the time of admission under NEET eligibility or should complete the age on or before 31st December of the year of his/her admission to the 1st year MBBS/BDS Course.

• 85% of Seats in Government colleges (after exclusion of 15 % seats transferred to All India Quota)
• 10% of total seats in specified Government Medical / Dental Colleges reserved for economically weaker section ( EWS ) Category

The private medical college Seat  selection process 

Private colleges in Uttar Pradesh may further be divided into two one is trust other is minority institutes. For all private medical colleges in UP, the state government decides its fee structure.100 % seats in private medical colleges Students from any Indian state are eligible to apply for private medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh. No caste-based reservation is applicable. Minority college seat is reserve for minority students.

STEPS FOR COUNSELLING PROCESS

Directorate General of Medical Education and Training UP is conducting three rounds of Counseling for NEET UG

• Verification of Documents – After successful registration and deposition of the security money, a candidate needs to report to the nodal centers for verification of documents. If a candidate fails to report to the respective nodal center in the stipulated time, their seat will be given to the candidate next in line. Only after the successful verification of the documents, a candidate will be able to proceed to the next stage of UP NEET counseling 2020
• Online Admission Process for allotted candidates

Offline Process

1. For Government Medical/Dental Colleges -Rest fee(in Cash) and Original documents to be submitted to allotted college - Go to medical board at allotted college/ nodal center -Eligible for participation in 2nd round. (up gradation of seat/college)
2. For Private Medical/Dental Colleges -DD in favour of Director General Medical Education and Training UP Payable at Lucknow of remaining amount of tuition fee and original documents submit to nodal center not to allotted college -Go to medical board at nodal center -Eligible for participation in 2nd round. (up gradation of seat/college)

• After allotment, if the candidate does not complete the admission process then the security fee will be forfeited. If a candidate wants to participate in 2nd round, then the security fee is to be deposited again.
• Candidate will be provided a button of <pay tuition fee> to submit online tuition fee at the page of allotment result. The candidate has to pay Rs. 30,000/- (Rs. Thirty thousand only) in case he/she has been allotted seat of Government Institutions. If the candidate has been allotted a seat at a private institution, he/she has to pay Rs. 2,00,000/- (Rs. Two lakhs only)
