The Shimoga Institute of Medical Sciences, Shivamogga, is an Autonomous Government College established in the Year 2007. It is located in the beautiful city of Shimoga which is known as the Gateway of Malnad - A beautiful and natural scenic location covered with green carpet. The college is Affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences- RGUHS, Karnataka and recognized by National Medical Commission (NMC). It has an annual intake of 150 MBBS seats and 42 seats in 16 disciplines of Post-Graduate studies. It is well-connected by Road and Rail route and is on Bangalore-Honnavara National high-way 206.
The SIMS college is spread in over an area of lush green 25 acres of land, in the premises of Government Mc. Gann Hospital at Shimoga. The total building is constructed in an area of 223838sqft with 4 floors. The total floor area available, including College, Boys & Girls Hostels, Doctors quarters, about 34488 square meters. There are very good spacious Classrooms, Lecture halls, Examination halls & Demonstration rooms. The Institute is fully equipped with clinical Laboratories, Museums and Auditorium. Library and information center is situated in 1700 sq ft of floor area spread over in 2nd floor and 3rd floor. There are huge collection of Medical Books, Indian & Foreign Journals with separate reading space for students & Teaching Staff with Digital Library. Separate hostel for boys and girls with mess facility. A Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratory(VRDL) has been established by Government of India in SIMS.
The Government Mc. Gann Hospital constructed by British Administrator during 1880 in 70 acres. During 1991-92 the new general hospital block with 367 beds capacity has been constructed, The floor area of the Government Mc. Gann Hospital available is 31340 sq. meters. Mc.Gann Hospital served as a major centre for health in Shivamogga District. McGann worked in Shimoga hospital maintained by Mysore Government and exclusively worked to control Malaria which was rampant in the area during 19th century. He worked in Shimoga for more than three decades and retired in 1908, returned to United Kingdom, but again came back to Mysore and stayed there till his death in 1936. A Hospital in memory of McGann was constructed at Shimoga, (a part of Mysore State) during 1932-1935 and it is called McGann Hospital, Shimoga. The foundation stone for the hospital was laid by then Maharaja of Mysore, Krishna Raja Wadiyar IV on 16 January 1932.
Now the hospital is fully equipped with 950 beds and around 65 beds in ICU's and there are 15 Operation Theatres including major and minor OT. It is a tertiary care hospital with 24X7 emergency and trauma care facility, Eye bank and blood bank facilities are available. There are very good clinical and diagnostic facilities in the Hospital. The Hospital has facilities for burn treatment, Critical care services, Pharmacy and Physiotherapy. The Hospital's general specialities include General Medicine, General Surgery, OBG, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Radiodiagnosis, ENT, Ophthalmology, Anaesthesiology, Pathology, Microbiology, Biochemistry & Forensic Medicine. Super-Speciality departments include: Cardiology, Pediatric Surgery, Gastroenterology, Plastic Surgery, Urology, Facio Maxillary & Dialysis.

The MCC/DGHS will be doing Counseling for 15% AIQ, 100% Deemed Universities, Central Universities (Delhi University, AMU & BHU including Institutional/ Domicile Quota), ESIC, AFMC(only Registration Part) &I.P University (VMMC & SJH AND ABVIMS & RML& ESIC Dental, Delhi (15% AIQ + 85% Institutional Quota ) 100% AIIMS, 100% JIPMER and B.Sc. Nursing (only 08 Central Institutes).The role of MCC of DGHS is limited to allotment of seats to the participating candidates, as per their merit and choice, which starts only after receiving the list/data/Information of successful candidates from National Testing Agency i.e. the NEET (UG) examination conducting body
There will be four rounds of AIQ online counseling i.e. AIQ Round 1, AIQ Round 2, AIQ Mop-Up Round and AIQ Stray Vacancy Round (SLA (C) No. 10487 of 2021 in the matter of Nihila P.P. v/s MCC & Ors. Hon’ble Supreme Court of India) which will be conducted in online mode. All candidates who have qualified for All India Quota seats on the basis of their rank in NEET UG conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) across the Country. Eligible candidates may download the Rank letter/ Result from NTA website. Cut-off rank of eligible candidates will also be available on the MCC website (www.mcc.nic.in). No seats will be reverted back after the completion of round 2 of AIQ to the States.
