The Government Medical College, Kottayam, was established in the Year 1960 and is the third government-run medical college in Kerala. The college which initially functioned in the District Hospital, Kottayam from 1962 to 1970 was shifted to Arpookara in April 1970. It is affiliated to Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) and recognized by Govt. of India and the National Medical Commission (NMC). It has an annual intake of 175 seats in MBBS, 108 seats in 22 disciplines of Post-Graduate studies and 18 seats in 9 disciplines of super- Specialization studies. The campus is about 8 km (5.0 mi) north of Kottayam in Gandhinagar-Arpookkara area in Central Kerala.
The Medical College and Hospital are located within the campus surrounded by green cover. It has good infrastructure with spacious classrooms, Lecture halls to accommodate around 175, Examination rooms, Demonstration rooms, Seminar halls. There are Departmental museums and well-equipped Laboratories. There is a huge Auditorium located deep inside the campus. There are Canteens and Recreation halls for students. There are separate hostel facilities for Boys and Girls and Indoor and Outdoor Games and Sports facilities. The college has well-stocked library with an excellent collection of medical books and journals, back volumes, Atlases, Dictionaries, Directories, Encyclopaedias, Technical Reports. There are separate Reading rooms and the E- library has good Internet facility. The college has pre-clinical, para-clinical and clinical disciplines. Through over the years the campus has grown into a small township with in house banking facilities, co-operative stores, Post Office, canteens, hotels, lodging facilities as well as subsidized hostels and accommodations for the faculty.

The collegiate institutions attached to Medical College Kottayam are Medical College Hospital (MCH), Institute of Child Health (ICH) and Nursing College, Kottayam (CNK).
Institute of Child Health (ICH): In 1975, the ESI Hospital was taken over to start the children's hospital - ICH. It houses the departments of pediatrics and pediatric surgery. It imparts curative and preventive health for children from all districts of central Kerala: Kottayam, Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Alapuzha and Ernakulam. The average daily outpatients being treated in this institution is 500. About 9,750 children are treated as inpatients annually in various specialties. ICH family welfare centre, medical records library and incinerator room are attached to the Institute of Child Health.
Leukemia ward (Walli's children cancer care centre): A newly constructed leukemia ward was commissioned on 29.10.2005 attached to the Institute of Child Health as a sponsored programme.
Medical college Hospital: The bed strength of the Medical College Hospital alone is 1401, although the hospital frequently operates at 140%–150% capacity. The present facilities include: round the clock casualty service, Blood Bank facility, modern lab and imaging services, colour doppler, TMT, holter monitor, haemodialysis, endoscopic & laparoscopic procedures, open heart surgery, specialised pain clinic under anaesthesiology, computerised pulmonary function lab under the Chest & TB dept, cardiac rehabilitation centre under Cardiology dept, specialised trauma care centre, advanced intensive care units for Surgery, Medicine, Cardiac services, Neuro-surgery & Plastic Surgery.

There will be four rounds of AIQ online counseling i.e. AIQ Round 1, AIQ Round 2, AIQ Mop-Up Round and AIQ Stray Vacancy Round (SLA (C) No. 10487 of 2021 in the matter of Nihila P.P. v/s MCC & Ors. Hon’ble Supreme Court of India) which will be conducted in online mode. All candidates who have qualified for All India Quota seats on the basis of their rank in NEET UG conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) across the Country. Eligible candidates may download the Rank letter/ Result from NTA website. Cut-off rank of eligible candidates will also be available on the MCC website (www.mcc.nic.in). No seats will be reverted back after the completion of round 2 of AIQ to the States.

The medical aspirants seeking MBBS/BDS admission at Kerala will have to register themselves for the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations KEAM in the admission section for the admission process by filling out their application form. Kerala, MBBS/BDS admission is done on the basis of marks secured in NEET. Candidates who will qualify NEET Exam and meet the eligibility requirements can only register and fill the application form for KEAM MBBS / BDS admission. KEAM counseling is conducted in Three Round (Round 1, Round 2, and Subsequent MOP UP rounds). Seat selection for Government Seats and for Management quota seats will be through web counseling

Reservation for All India Quota for MBBS Courses in Self-Financing Medical colleges:- Fifteen percent of the seats for the admission of students to MBBS Courses in Self-Financing Medical Colleges in Kerala are set apart for the allotment of candidates irrespective of their Domicile as per the rank obtained in the NEET-UG conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) New Delhi.
